ATLANTA, Martin Luther King's birthplace. Jan 1929
PLAY ME
I was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on the 15th of January 1929, the same year as the Wall Street crash.
My father, Martin Luther King senior, of African and Irish descent, was a reverend in the Baptist church.
My mother, a schoolteacher named Alberta Williams, played as an organist in the choir of the same church as my father. When I was a child, I used to go out and play in the neighbourhood with children my age,
black and white, having fun, without any distinction. With the start of primary school, many things changed.
I went to Yonge street elementary school and David T. Howard Elementary with very good results. At a certain point, from one day to the next, I was excluded from the playground:
the children didn't talk to me anymore... everything became very strange. We lived in a middle-class area, on Auburn Avenue, nicknamed the Black Paradise, where the ghetto bourgeois lived. My mother tried to reassure me and explain to me what it meant to be black and to live in a Southern state in those years,
she told me about our distant African origins, the long and terrible slavery our people endured, the War of Secession that gave us, at least formally, our freedom. But I still didn't understand why we used to be able to play together and now we can't? Were we different?
