A hearty meal
SANTA CLARA, Mausoleum of Che Guevara. 1967
PLAY ME
They hunted me down like an animal in Bolivia...
The operation was led by Flix Rodrguez, a CIA agent who had infiltrated Cuba. In the first days of October, I didn't know where to go.
I had no food and no way out. I took refuge in a ravine where I was soon surrounded by military forces. Here I was captured by the Bolivian army, along with other guerrillas,
in the Quebrada del Yuro, a few kilometres from the village of La Higuera. They shot me in the kneecaps and I was forced to surrender... I was unarmed and I remember saying: "Don't shoot! I am Che Guevara! I can be more useful to you alive than dead.
The head of the Bolivian executive, Ren Barrientos, as soon as he was informed of my capture, ordered my killing and issued a communiqu stating that I had died in combat... Nothing could be more cowardly and untrue! They locked me up in a small room in the village school where I spent the night in agony. I asked for something to eat, as I would have liked to die on a full stomach,
so they brought me a plate of mutton with potatoes, which I completely devoured. They did not wait, fortunately... I was killed early the next afternoon, on 9 October 1967. They chose at random, among some volunteers, to kill me. Mario Tern, an army sergeant, was the lucky one... I shouted a farewell to the people I loved. I was Che, but I was still a man. There was no reason to tremble.
